Operations Prompt Formatting Task Prompts

Messy Task Prompt Formatter

Turns a vague or mixed-up task description into a clean prompt with a defined task, context, constraints, and output format.

Overview

Task prompts fail when the task, context, constraints, and output format are all mixed into one sentence. The AI ends up guessing what matters most. This formatter separates those concerns. You write what you need done however it comes out — then it gets restructured into something the AI can execute without asking follow-up questions.

Workflow

  1. Write out the task however it comes

Include what you need done, what the AI has to work with, and any rules or constraints — in whatever order.

  2. Open in Prompt Formatter

Paste the description. The formatter separates task, context, constraints, and output format.

  3. Check the requirements section

The Requirements section is where task prompts most often go wrong. Make sure all constraints and rules are explicit before using the prompt.

  4. Use or save the structured prompt

Use the formatted result directly, or save it as a reusable template for this task type.

Why This Works

  • Separating task from input removes a common failure mode where the AI confuses what to do with what it has to work with
  • An explicit scope section reduces over-generation — AI models tend to expand scope unless told not to
  • Short, concrete output format instructions produce more consistent results than open-ended ones

Best for

  • Short task descriptions that mix goal, data, and constraints together
  • Tasks with unclear scope where the AI has been producing too much or too little
  • Recurring tasks you want to standardise as a prompt template

Not for

  • Multi-step workflows with dependencies — those need a different structure
  • Tasks where the input data is embedded in the prompt and can't be separated

Use cases

  • Formatting a quick Slack message task into a prompt you can hand to an AI assistant
  • Cleaning up a task you wrote mid-meeting before giving it to an automated workflow
  • Turning a client request email into a clear AI task prompt
  • Reformatting a recurring task prompt to make it reusable for future runs
